Photography

My images look for composure within various urban landscapes, celebrating the beauty of an ad hoc utilitarian world. I search for a sense of poise amid the bustling chaos of an everchanging stage. People feature sparingly within my photographs, interspersed merely to demonstrate scale and occupation, without detracting from the overarching compositional gesture. My goal is to keep a low profile in my search for the perfect frame — a handheld camera is my only tool — discrete and unassuming.

Akin to my work in practice, I build an image in the same way I design — a timely thought or feeling, spurred on by a driving idea that calls to be tested. To me, a photograph is a collection of components, composed in the pursuit of a richer, deeper, more emotive story. The viewer’s eye should find a natural resonance that moves to the rhythm of the subject, before organically coming to rest. There is a solitude about my images, devoid of visual clutter to not distract, instead evoking one’s fondest memories of a time or a place.

My photographic images do not strive for perfection, instead, they seek to uncover the beauty that lies within the two-dimensional viewfinder. Parallel perspective and direct elevation feature prominently across my work, devised to bring order upon the mundane to enforce a certain sense of rigour. When things are neatly aligned, the viewer’s eye is placed at ease, allowing compositional eccentricities to bubble to the surface. There is something quite lovely about finding beauty in considered framing and thoughtful composure, allowing the primary subject to be celebrated for whatever it wants to be.
