Pho Mo

100m2.   NZD $0.3m.   Limited professional services.

Fitting with its vibrant bohemian locale, Pho Mo is light-hearted, lively, and enticing, centred around cheap eats and bangin’ music. From the street, a hot pink ceiling and glowing neons catch the eye of passers-by, drawing them in to the markedly narrow space. Conceived as a modern take on a longstanding hawker scene, the establishment is eye catching and unfussy, comprising a streamlined counter from end to end, flanked by a linear array of durable tables and chairs. Materials are robust and unfussy, responsive to the daily rush of late-night cravings, and lunchtime regulars who reside nearby.

Bold graphics and vibrant hues sit neatly against the more restrained, harkening a familiar authenticity akin to a streetside stall. Sterile ceilings are stripped away in favour an honest concrete construction, enveloped in a striking fuchsia hue. Chevron timber boards serve as a hardwearing backdrop to the unending activity of the back-of-house domain, instilling patina through the daily knocks of quintessential hospitality. Glazed ceramic tiles are a common sight throughout — a nod to the owner’s former vocation — skilfully laid in unexpected ways for guests to discover.

Pho Mo is a humble venue of tasty Asian eats, distilled to its essential parts, amid a neon glow of magenta, cobalt, and canary.

Neon hues of magenta, blue, and yellow pair effortlessly amid their bohemian surrounds, interspersed by a softer tonality of chevron timber boards and gritty concrete floors.
